Upon entering the gallery the viewer is confronted by a 6’ x 6’ x 6’ cube with a welcome mat and glowing doorknob. The cube has a projection on it as well as a soundtrack emanating from inside. The video and sound being projected is scenes from my experience shot with a custom head cam (which can be seen in the segment of the video where I am brushing my teeth).

The viewer approaches the cube and wants to enter. Suddenly, as they begin to push the door open, the video disappears, the sound ceases, the doorknob glow fades out and several white lights illuminate the cube from inside. The viewer is unable to enter the cube because the door kept from opening wide by a privacy chain.

What was previously an active and stimulating environment is suddenly quiet and still. The viewer now finds him/her self in a solitary space, left alone to contemplate. As the door to the cube is closed again, the interior lights click off, the video and sound return and the space is as it was when it was first encountered.

The piece is about the discrepancy of experience between each and every individual. As much as I want the viewer to enter my experience and to feel what it is like to be me, total experiential communication is impossible. Any attempt at representation falls short.
